About the Book
Lindsay and Kerrie Ann are sisters who have known hardship from an early age. Without guidance from their neglectful mother, their only aid came from an unlikely source, a retired exotic dancer by the name of Miss Honi Love. When the girls’ mother was sent to prison, Miss Honi tried unsuccessfully to save them from being separated and sent into foster care.
Thirty years later, Lindsay is still trying to reconnect with her sister. The owner of a bookstore in the sleepy California seaside town of Blue Moon Bay, she was lucky enough to have been adopted by a loving couple. Unbeknownst to her, Kerrie Ann has suffered a very different life. Bounced from one foster home to the next, she ran away as a teenager before becoming a drug-addicted single mother. Now, newly sober, Kerrie Ann is fighting to regain custody of the little girl who was taken from her. Neither sister’s expectations are met when they’re finally reunited. But as the two sisters engage in the fiercest battles of their lives, they are at last drawn together despite their differences, restoring belief in the unshakable bond of family.
The thirteenth novel, is dedicated to the one of the Author’s sister’s Patty, who lives in the real-life town of Half Moon Bay, California. I’ve been to Half Moon Bay on several occasions, plus, I live close to the San Francisco bay area. The location has added even more of a connection to the book for me.
In today’s society, I think a lot of us can relate to the dysfunction that this distressed, separated, half-family went through. Reading this book, the characters do have a lot of what I consider to be real-life tribulations. Everything from foster homes, running away, drugs, low self-esteem, and teen pregnancy.
Can you imagine being Lindsay at nine years old, and having your drug addict mother (who eventually goes to prison) hand you your newborn sister, Kerrie Ann, and expect you to fend after yourself plus, take care of her? What about Child Protective Services paying a visit and pulling what little of a family you have apart?
Miss Honi, the neighbor that basically helped raise the girls is quite the colorful character. However, you tend to be drawn to her warm heart immediately, which you will find just beneath her rough exterior. She also tends to read people for who they are which I admire about her.
Fast forward 30 years..
Kerrie Ann, who has lost her only daughter to the State’s system as well, due to drugs, is on her way to pay an unannounced visit to her recently discovered sister, Lindsay. As a last ditch effort, she’s hoping against hope, that Lindsay can help her get her daughter back by vouching for her.
Lindsay now owns a book cafe’ which Miss Honi helps her with. She’s also living with her boyfriend, Grant, who by the way, gets on my nerves
I can see why Miss Honi doesn’t think too highly of him. Not to worry though, Lindsay is about to meet someone else soon.
With Kerrie Ann’s presence, Lindsay has discovers she has some unresolved, deep rooted feelings that are finding their way back. There’s a lot both sisters need to work through before they can move ahead towards any sort of relationship.
I found that both Lindsay and Kerrie Ann have a lot of the same underlying issues, only to be acted out in different ways.
This book will capture you from the beginning and beg not to be put down! You will definitely experience a lot of different emotions! I would luv to tell you how this book ends… let me just say by reading this heartfelt journey of two sisters, everything you do affects someone else to a certain degree, and you can’t even imagine all the twists and turns your life can take. This is a very well written book, with an ending that you won’t be disappointed with.
