When we come across an old patchwork quilt, no matter how worn or faded with age, we touch it with awe. In doing so, we connect with the people who came before us and the memories they bring to mind. Each scrap of material used for the many patches, or panels, that make up the quilt came from a cloth or item of clothing that was once used or worn by someone from the past.

Create a paper patchwork quilt that depicts a family’s history and most-loved experiences.

Document special memories, family traditions, hopes and dreams, significant events, and loved ones in My Paper Memory Quilt: A Family History Pack created to record the special qualities and remembrances that make each person unique. Twenty-four paper quilt squares are provided to help get started. Includes exciting craft ideas and suggestions for classroom use!

Spark your children’s creativity, imagination, and writing by having them craft a Paper Memory Quilt!  There is unlimited options for them to express themselves.  This makes for a heartfelt keepsake, and also an Awesome gift for their Grandparents or close relative!

THEMES FOR PANELS OF YOUR MEMORY QUILT:

FAMILY HISTORY

* How about a panel that shows your ancestors who were the first to come to the United States and the hopes that they had in emigrating here? You could even include a map of the country from which they came.
* A happy memory that depicts a fun time with your mother or father or grandparent.
* A panel that talks about how your parents decided on your name.
* A patch for a beloved family pet.
* A panel celebrating the birth of a child.
* The time you achieved an important goal.

HOPES, DREAMS, AND WISHES

* A panel depicting a hope or dream you hold for your own future.
* A panel that shows what you’d like to be when you grow up.
* Maybe you want to express a hope for the environment.
* A hope for a family member whom you love or who is ill.

MEMORIES OF FUN AND LAUGHTER

* How about a panel showing your best Halloween costume?
* A panel on which you paste photographs of all the things and people that make you happy.
* Or one for the time when your grandmother showed you how to bake bread or make chocolate chip cookies.
* Or your uncle took you camping for the first time.

HEALING GRIEF AND FEARS

* A square to honor someone whom you loved and lost, such as a family member who was special to you. You can paste a photo of that person and draw an object you associate with her or him.
* A patch for the time you helped someone in need.
* A patch illustrating some of the blessings in your life that you sometimes take for granted.

FAMILY TRADITIONS AND SPECIAL DAYS

* A panel for a special family holiday, showing how it is celebrated. Which rituals are observed? What foods are eaten? You might even write down a recipe on how a special food is prepared.
* A panel for favorite family sayings, perhaps using the language that was originally spoken by your family.

Below are links to our printable quilt panels you can use to create your own paper memory quilt. These are taken from my book, My Paper Memory Quilt: A Family History Pack. Some of the panels have artwork to get you started; other are blank so you can design them yourself. Use your imagination to draw, write, color, paint or paste photos that capture your family history.

About the Author.. Click on Bill’s Photo to learn more…

Author Bill Zimmerman, the creator of www.billztreasurechest.com, has been a questioner all his life. Wanting to learn from people was the motivating reason that led him to a career as a journalist and prize-winning newspaper editor.

For 13 years he created an interactive, syndicated page for Newsday newspaper to teach young people about current events. It pioneered the use of interactive techniques found in his books to encourage young readers to express their opinions about the world they live in and brought in hundreds of thousands of letters. The page was nominated twice for a Pulitzer Prize.

During the past 20 years Bill has written some 15 books which are featured throughout this site. His newest is 100 Things Guys Need to Know (Free Spirit Publishing), a book of encouraging words for boys.

His work has been featured on the Today Show, PBS’s acclaimed Ancestors Series, in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and such magazines as Family Circle, Parents, Esquire, Business Week, and Essence.

Bill and his wife formed a kitchen-table press, Guarionex Press, Ltd., and published his first four books. They make their home in New York City and have a daughter and a dog.

A Special Thanks goes out to Bill for introducing both myself and my Kiddo’s to this very Creative Keepsake!
