Each week, as you reflect on guided Scripture readings aligned with the church seasons, you will receive a wealth of insight from historical and contemporary writings. Full-color artwork will engage the soul; quotes, hymns, prayers, and poems enhance the rich devotional experience. Also includes a Dictionary/Concordance, New Living Translation of the Bible (NLT) word study system with Hebrew/ Greek dictionary. A beautiful layout of art and devotional content, and an online community and content (coming Fall 2009) will extend the experience.
Key Features:
Writings from every continent and century of the Christian Church – Contemporary and historical writings from Christians across the globe such as St. Augustine, Charles Wesley, and Henri Nouwen.
Full-Color Art – Full color art offers another kind of reflective devotional experience, with artwork from contemporary and historical artists.
Center column reference text with word study system – The clear New Living Translation text in this Bible is set in a center-column reference format, with Greek and Hebrew word studies to give you greater insight in study. There are also icons in the margins of the text to indicate which Scripture passages are linked to which writings.
Variety of Reflective Content – The content is arranged so that every week the reader has a variety of content for reading and reflection. Each week follows a theme appropriate to the Church season (such as Advent, Easter, etc). The content included for each week includes full-color art; Scripture readings; a historical reading; a contemporary reading; a prayer, creed, hymn or quote; and space for reflection.
Space for your response to God’s promptings – Add your tile to the mosaic—write or draw your response, prayers and questions in the provided space.
“The devotional side of this Bible has a large collection of diverse Christian art, quotes, stories, Biblical observations and other materials from every continent and every age of Christian history. It truly does present a “Mosaic” of the Christian church.”– Michael Spencer, Pastor, Blogger, Author
“What I love about the Holy Bible Mosaic is that it drives home the point that our God is not bound by denominations, cultures or time. The artwork is beautiful, and the creeds, poems and insights about God are great ones from across the history of the church. This is the perfect Bible for corporate worship, and one that my family will be using regularly in the years to come.” – Matt Mikalatos, Author
Each weekly meditation in Holy Bible: Mosaic is labeled with a week from the church year, and the Scripture readings are drawn from the passages that are traditionally read during that week by churches around the world. If you choose to follow this plan for reading the Bible, you will be truly connected with the global, historical church as you journey through the year, following the rhythms of God’s work in the world.

Someone mentioned to be that some of the quotes in the devotional section of the Mosaic Bible were “questionable.” Since I don’t have a copy in hand and have vision problems that prevent me from seeing it well via the internet can you please tell me how you determined what quotes to include in the section?
Thanks!

#4 by Cee on September 24, 2009 - 5:57 PM
I would like to know more about the online community and content, and also what the overall intent was when the material was put together — I’m not really sure how to phrase that second question, but I’d like to know, I guess, what inspired them to put this material together. Thank you for this giveaway. It sounds absolutely wonderful!

Will there be a paperback version of this book? It seems like it would make a wonderful gift but $29.99 would add up fast for as many people as I buy for!

This appears to be the Bible that I have been waiting for – it sounds like it has just about everything…I am wondering how many people were involved in compiling such a magnificent amount of data into one book? Whose idea was it? And do you feel that this is the Bible that many Christians have been waiting for?
Note to frugalplus – this is a wonderful giveaway…I really would love to win this one

I have a few questions about the book itself – does it go through the entire Bible, or just selected passages? And how is the Church Year defined? What denominations were represented in putting the calendar/topics together?
(And we’ve posted about this at Winning Readings: http://winningreadings.blogspot.com/2009/10/holy-bible-mosaic.html)

My question is:
How much did Wycliffe Bible Translators actually contribute to the editing of this Mosaic? (It mentions the “partnership” between Tyndale & Wycliffe, but I didn’t notice if it mentions Wycliffe’s part in the editing of this particular Bible.) Thanks!

Per Keith…
This appears to be the Bible that I have been waiting for – it sounds like it has just about everything…I am wondering how many people were involved in compiling such a magnificent amount of data into one book? Whose idea was it? And do you feel that this is the Bible that many Christians have been waiting for?
There were approximately 60 people involved in creating and editing the content and selecting the artwork. It was certainly quite an undertaking. The idea sort of emerged from two different streams. Originally, David Sanford of Credo Communications (then Sanford Communications) came to Tyndale with an idea about creating a specialty devotional Bible for younger, missionally-oriented Christians, and after looking over the proposal I suggested (in the context of a larger brainstorming meeting) a number of changes to that proposal that essentially became Mosaic. I know we came up with a Bible that was exactly what I was looking for; hopefully others will find that to be the case as well.
How long did the project take?
The idea for this project was born in the summer of 2006, so in all it took about three years.
Does it contain the entire Bible, or just selected passages?
Mosaic includes the entire Bible, though the readings in the Mosaic content do not cover the whole Bible in a year like a One Year Bible does—they are specific passages chosen for each week to fit the church year and the topic that is brought into focus.
How is the church year defined?
The (Western) church year begins in Advent and proceeds through the seasons of Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. There are lots of different specific systems for following the church year, and Mosaic doesn’t correspond exactly to any of them. What we have done is create a system that is flexible enough to be used within any number of denominations that are already using a (Western) church calendar-based lectionary, without specifically choosing one to the exclusion of others. In creating the readings, for example, I drew from all three years of the Revised Common Lectionary, the Propers and daily readings from the Book of Common Prayer, and other lectionary sources.
I’ve heard that some of the quotes are “questionable.” How did you determine what quotes to include?
We were very deliberate about bringing in voices from around the world, throughout history, and from many different strands of Christian tradition. This has inevitably led to some people feeling like a particular person or tradition is “out-of-bounds,” and therefore disregarding the entire thing. This is unfortunate, in my view. One thing I think Mosaic makes very clear is that Christianity transcends cultural boundaries, and often the theological boundaries that have been set up are far narrower than they should be.
Tell me more about the online community and content.
The online community and content will all be a part of http://www.holybiblemosaic.com. There, I will be interacting via the blog and adding new content concerning the church year, sometimes posting extended versions of some of the quotes and excerpts from within Mosaic, etc. The community will extend beyond commenting on my blog posts, however. There is a forum that is up right now, but will be launched in earnest when Advent begins in November. Hopefully, users will come there and discuss how God is using Mosaic to speak into their lives and share what they are learning together.
Is it available in other translations?
No, Mosaic is only available in the New Living Translation.
Will there ever be a chronological version of this Bible? A children’s version?
No. There is certainly a place for chronological Bibles and children’s Bibles, but Mosaic so something different, and I don’t think it is well suited for either format.
Will there be an inexpensive paperback version available?
There aren’t plans right now to release the full-blown Bible in a paperback format, but we do have two devotionals that are available at a very reasonable price. The Advent devotional (ISBN 978-1-4143-3578-0) contains the four weeks of Advent plus a Scripture section that presents all of the Scripture readings from those four weeks in place of the entire Bible. It is a nice handy size and at $1.99 makes a great gift! This spring we will have a similar Lent Devotional, with 7 weeks of content and a price of $2.99.
How much did Wycliffe Bible Translators actually contribute to the editing of Mosaic?
Wycliffe was not involved with this project editorially, but a portion of the proceeds from this Bible (and every NLT Bible) is designated to support the ministry of Wycliffe Bible Translators and their mission to make God’s Word available in the heart language of every person in the world.

First, I would like to thank Keith Williams for all his informative answers. After reading these responses, it makes me want to own a copy of the Mosaic Bible even more. It sounds like a lot of work was put into creating this Bible. I love the way it is divided up into the church seasons & how it begins with the Advent season, my favorite time of year
I am excited to hear about the little paperbacks for the Advent season. I plan to get these as gifts for family members. I also am impressed with how many people were involved in the creation of this work & that a lot of viewpoints are expressed. I am also happy to hear about the online community & blog. I would so love to win this Bible, but if I don’t, I hope to be able to own one someday:) Thank you & God Bless
