Something a bit different here on Frugal Plus..
I was one of the individuals interviewed for this program. My first time with a TV camera staring at me.. yes, I was a little nervous. There is no guarantee that they will use any of my sound bytes for this program, However, I feel it is important to get all the facts out there, so that the general public can make an informed decision for themselves.

Our family has chosen not to get the H1N1 vaccine. I personally feel there has not been enough time to sufficiently and effectively test this vaccine for potential side effects, and/or benefits. Having our Government announce that it is safe for everyone to get, just doesn’t do it for me. I want to see concrete facts and actually find out what side effects and long term issues this vaccine may have for people, most importantly, my children.
With Thiomersal being an mercury containing agent included in this vaccine, that alone raises red flags for me. Mercury is unsafe in any levels in your bloodstream. I do understand you can request a vaccine that does not contain this agent, but then my next question is, why would they make a vaccine that does include Thiomersal to begin with, and how can you be 100% positive that employee mistakes won’t be made in administering the vaccine?
Another fact to think about is that many people across our Country in past years have died from various flu viruses. As terrible as this is, this is not something that is original to the H1N1. Also to be taken into account is that many of the confirmed cases that have contracted the H1N1 virus are mild cases.
I will do my best to protect myself and my family by frequent hand-washing, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, getting daily exercise out in the fresh air, and covering your nose and mouth if you sneeze or cough, and to do the same if someone next to you coughs or sneezes. These habits are not new to our household, they have been part of our daily life for years now.
Of course, should any of us be unfortunate enough to contract the H1N1 flu virus, I wouldn’t hesitate to go in to see our local Dr. immediately. From what I am told, difficult breathing and dehydration are two of the main and dangerous symptoms to watch for.
The H1N1, or swine, flu virus first appeared in April in Mexico before arriving in the USA. In anticipation of the fall flu season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reset the swine flu numbers and now tracks cases on a regional level. You can click HERE to view the swine flu cases by region.
You can Check out the many topics HERE regarding the H1N1 flu.
This is a very personal and important decision, and you have to conclude what is best for you and your family. Do the benefits outweigh the unknown? Are you planning on getting or have already received the H1N1 vaccination? What are your thoughts?

I wanted to share with you this email I received…
Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist), having clinical experience of over 20 years.
The following message given by him; I feel it makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know.
The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it’s almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):
1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).
2. “Hands-off-the-face” approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).
3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don’t trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don’t under estimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at using a Neti pot, but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton swabs dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*
5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C. *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

good article about H1N1 and I agree there isn’t enough information out there or it hasn’t been tested throughly for me to choose to give it to my family–So I agree with you. I’ll be watching you today. Thanks to MLM for talking about this topic too.

I just want to say that I am so glad you posted this as I ‘totally’ agree with you. We too have chosen NOT to get the H1N1 vaccine. I truly appreciate that you would take the time to educate others on this very sensitive topic.
Thanks Jill! Keep up the awesome work on FrugalPlus!

We won’t be getting the H1N1 vaccine either. I’ve never gotten a flu vaccine and neither has Thaddeus and neither of us has ever had the flu so I’m not worried about it.
I do agree with you Jill, I don’t trust the governments word on it being safe. We were talking about this last night (my husband and I). This strain of flu hasn’t been around very long (as you mentioned since April in Mexico) and they are pushing this vaccine on everyone like there is no tomorrow, yet they don’t have enough of it. They should have just done the right thing when it started showing up in the US and CLOSED THE BORDERS and not let anyone in unless they were cleared of not having the flu.

I completely agree with you Jill! I’m not against all vaccines, but I don’t think there has been enough time to be sure this is a safe vaccine or even effective for that matter. And I do agree with your comments about flu in general. Different strains of flu come out every year and you should do what you can to keep your immune system healthy. If I had a compromised immune system, perhaps I would make a different choice, but I would still have concerns about the rush to come up with this vaccine. Thanks for covering the topic and very exciting that you might be on the news!! Good job!

I have signed up for it but I am having second thoughts. I really do not want to be a guinea pig. I am truly worried about getting it now. I do home daycare and really should get it but I am so up in the air.

Hi Jill,
Thank you for writing the article, I am so torn by this issue. I am 7 months pregnant and my OB has told me that I will be getting the vaccine. Pregnant women can become very ill should they get H1N1, he has already delivered a few women early because they were so ill with the H1N1 that they could not continue on with the pregnancy. However, the vaccine isn’t yet available for us pregnant gals, so I am doing my best to stay healthy and keeping my family healthy.
Here is where I am really torn, since I can’t get vaccinated now my family needs to stay healthy so that I don’t get the H1N1. My daughter is 4 and I wasn’t going to give her the vaccine but my family needs to be vaccinated so that I don’t get sick. Since they are the ones that I am around the most, they need to be my defense! I am considering giving her the mist vaccine, which is available without mercury but it is a live virus.
I have asked just about everyone I know if they are getting their children vaccinated and the majority of them have said no because of the mercury issue and also because they feel that the vaccine hasn’t been tested. I guess at this point it comes down to who the experts in this subject are and those are the people we are supposed to trust.
As of today, I would be first in line to get the vaccine for myself. But I am still torn about giving it to my daughter. My husband said that he will also get the vaccine. We have all had our flu shots and have had no reactions.

I think you did a wonderful job with the interview and with answering the questions in a way that help inform the public. (Bloggy World)
My husband received the regular flu shot and we are thinking about getting it for the whole family. I agree that the Swine Flu shot has not been tested enough. I have watched TV broadcasts about it in the state of Georgia. I am undecided about getting it for my children. We continually hear of shortages for it as well.
Thank you.

I am so glad you are addressing this issue & showing us where we can get more info. I am so torn as to what to do & so afraid I will make the wrong decision for my children. Our schools are giving the navel mist next week & my doctor is telling me to get this for my children but my gut is telling me not to. I am so afraid of the negative results or things they might not even know about the vaccine. I have never even got the flu shot for myself or my kids because back when that first came out, it was a live virus & my sister got the flu from the shot & she was terribly sick. It is all very stressful for me trying to make a decision on this subject especially when the pros & cons are confusing
I will follow the story – thats all I can do right now.

My son and I were discussing this issue and I am completely undecided. He told me that his doctor is urging them to get the shot for his children aged 2 to 4.
I told him to do some research about the H1N1 vaccine before making a decision.

We have decided not to get our children or ourselves vaccinated. We have had a outbreak of this in our area and my husband, our middle son, and myself have had it. We were treated within the first 48 hours with Tamiflu and all did well. I must say however not only myself but some other people I’ve spoke with did have stomach upset with the Tamiflu it doesn’t effect everyone but it is to be noted but other than that it worked great. We were over it within a few days. I did speak with our doctor about getting our older child and our youngest child vaccinated because they didn’t contract it and their school is having a vaccination clinic and he did not recommend to have them vaccinated. He said the vaccination has not been tested enough in his opinion and is not worth the risk. I was told however by some people whose family have asthma the risk to them is very high and could be deadly if the contracted H1N1. So their doctor’s are recommending they get vaccinated. I don’t know anyone whose pregnant right now so I don’t know what their doctor’s are recommending. I think there needs to be more research done on this. People are so confused as what and what not to do and everywhere you turn there are so many different confusing issuses. I think you did a very good job reporting the facts on this Jill. It shed some light on things I have not heard about the vaccine. For instance the information about it containing mercury. It’s not being widely publicized on t.v. when they report on it. It makes me wonder what else they’re neglecting to tell us. I fear for those people who are not being properly informed on this. Great job, Jill!

Hey Jill thanks for posting such a important but hot topic and it is nice to see that we can all be respectable adults and discuss without offending anyone. My 5 year old and my 2 year old have both already had their flu shots and they had their H1N1 Nasal mist (which doesn’t contain themersol- non medical term mercury)shots on friday. They both have underlying health issues( such as asthma) and we disscussed this at great lenghts with their dr and we did alot of research as well. Florida is in pandimic state right now with all the outbreaks andtheir have been cases at my sons school as well. ALso next week my hubby, my seld, and my mil will all be getting our h1n1 shots as my mil lives with us and has alot of underlying medical issues(ex copd) andwe dont want to chance on bringing it home and giving to anyone espically my hubby who works with the public and comes in contact alot of foreigners on a daily basis all it would take is for him to bring it home and that could cause alot of problems and complications in my family. I have a medical background so i feel that we did the best to our knowledge to make the best decision that we could for the health and safety of our family. Thanks Jill great job!
