From the day Cobb and Mary meet kayaking on Maine’s Allagash River and fall deeply in love, the two approach life with the same sense of adventure they use to conquer the river’s treacherous rapids. But rivers do not let go so easily…and neither does their love. So when Mary’s life takes the cruelest turn, she vows to face those rough waters on her own terms and asks Cobb to promise, when the time comes, to help her return to their beloved river for one final journey.

Set against the rugged wilderness of Maine, the exotic islands of Indonesia, the sweeping panoramas of Yellowstone National Park, and the tranquil villages of rural New England, Eternal on the Water is at once heartbreaking and uplifting — a timeless, beautifully rendered story of true love’s power.

Living within driving distance of the Sierra mountains and Yosemite National Park, the wilderness has always held a respective fascination, so I knew Eternal on the Water would be a great fit for me!

Jonathan Cobb takes a sabbatical from teaching to explore the unknown wilderness and learn from nature. At one of the campsite meetings, he meets Mary who is into mythology and folklore. She asks Cobb if he used to be a bear because of the way he steals a dance and charms people. It doesn’t take long for that first meeting for their friendship to turn into romance.
They both have a lot in common, the love for nature being first and foremost.

The way the author wrote the sequence of events, you find out about Mary’s illness, Huntington’s Disease, that finally takes her at the beginning of the story, then you will take a step back in her (their) past that led up to her death.

You will enjoy spanning the globe with Cobb and Mary, and all the fascinating places they were lucky to explore. The travel combined with the personal-able characters ties this Novel into a bittersweet read and one not to be missed!
