Adventures at Walnut Grove: A Lesson about Teasing…

Is a story about friends that learn to treat others as they would like to be treated. Sammy is teased because he is a squirrel who has eyes like a raccoon. Sammy knows that name-calling is not nice, but his friends have a valuable lesson to learn. The name-caller soon becomes the one being teased. This story is a fun way to teach your children that teasing is hurtful. I hope that your children will enjoy Sammy’s adventures as much as mine do.

I have published Adventures at Walnut Grove because I believe that it teaches children an important lesson. Teasing is a problem everywhere in the world. My book is appropriate for children ages three to ten. I think that we should start teaching children at younger ages to treat others as they would like to be treated. Hopefully it would help prevent much of the name-calling as our children get older. Name-calling can also lead to other problems such as low self-esteem, lack of confidence and eventually bullying. Everyone would like to protect his or her child from teasing; unfortunately, we cannot. The only thing that we can do is try to help them better understand the consequences of teasing. Children learn everything so quickly. Books are a fun and successful way to relate a message to them.

This Adorable children’s book also includes a positive valuable message about teasing… “treat others as they would like to be treated”. The main character, Sammy, will steal your heart! There is also a great section at the end of the book with questions to spark discussions with your kids about teasing. This book is brilliantly written for children to enjoy and at the same time get the message loud and clear. The Illustrations are absolutely beautiful! (can I frame them?) :clap

The second book in this series is titled I DOUBLE Dare You! Silly and Sassy come to Walnut Grove to visit their cousin Sammy. Silly and Sassy are always getting into trouble. They play hide ‘n seek, have frog races, and play dare or double dare. How does this lead to jumping off a bridge?

Read I DOUBLE Dare you!To find out how everyone learns to take responsibility for his or her own actions. They will also discover that it’s not always wise to follow your friends.

Another Great Read for school-aged children! It reinforces the need to take responsibility for one’s own actions and, just as important, that it is okay to say “NO”. Once again, the Illustrations are just magnificent and jump off the page at every adventure, holding the Kiddo’s attention, along with reinforcing the important messages.

About the Author.. Click on Dana’s Photo to learn more…

One of the reasons that I decided to write a book about Teasing is because of the school shootings. These are horrific crimes. Unfortunately, it seems that they are happening more frequently. I will never forget the day that I took my three year old to pre-school. The school was implementing a new policy. All the doors of the school had to remain locked so that no one could enter the school. This policy was necessary due to all of the school shootings.

Like all parents, I feel that children should be safe wherever they are. I started thinking that some of the school shootings began with children getting teased or bullied. I decided to write a story about discouraging teasing and encouraging treating others the way that they would like to be treated.

I have always enjoyed creative writing. I currently reside in Allenton, Michigan with my husband, Brian, and our two sons, Danny and Joey.

Illustrator Judy Lehman, who happens to be Dana’s mother-in-law, was a former schoolteacher who took up art as a hobby about 35 years ago. Her hobby soon turned into a career. She began as an oil painter, but a few years later found watercolors and porcelain painting to be her passion. She has been traveling and teaching watercolors and porcelain painting for the last 30 years.

Judy is a member of the Michigan China Painting Teachers Association, Professional Porcelain Artist Association, and Michigan World Organization of China Painters. She has written numerous articles for various Porcelain magazines and published a booklet called “Create Your Own Treasures.” Her finished pieces have been featured in Porcelain Magazines. Some of her porcelain paintings are permanently on display in the World Organization’s Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

She currently resides in Hubbard Lake, MI with her husband George.
